Since 1991, East Kentucky Network (EKN) has been at the forefront of technology and innovation in Appalachia. It started over thirty years ago with bringing wireless service to the foothills of eastern Kentucky in the early days of cellular. EKN Data Center

Our 16,700-square-foot data center is a state-of-the-art facility providing a secure, accessible storage solution for business systems and data. It features redundant power sources, environmental controls, and transport capabilities to hub locations in Chicago and Ashburn, supported by our vast fiber network. We are prepared to meet the data storage needs of any business, no matter the size or location.

EKN Fiber

Our fiber network offers data transmission speeds up to 100 Gbps across our 400-mile redundant fiber ring. The network extends over 7,500 combined fiber miles, allowing for high-speed connectivity and serving as a foundation for our data center, enterprise solutions, and wireless services.

EKN Wireless Services

1991

Appalachian Cellular and Kentucky Cellular partner to establish wireless communication services in Eastern Kentucky.

2000

The East Kentucky Network fiber ring, utilizing a Nortel OPTera 3500 OC-48 system, is established as well as Appalachian Wireless, an East Kentucky Network company.

2005

East Kentucky Network adds a Cisco ONS 15454 in addition to its existing Nortel system. This DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing)/ROADM (reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer) is the first of its kind in Eastern Kentucky.

2016

East Kentucky Network installs a Ciena 6500 DWDM/ROADM network to keep up with increasing demands for broadband and Ethernet services in the region.

2019

East Kentucky Network enhances the network by establishing 100 Gbps (gigabits per second) connectivity to the main internet colocation/peering hotels in Chicago, Illinois and Ashburn, Virginia.

2022

East Kentucky Network begins offering its cutting-edge services to customers around the world.
